How did Geico create the Gecko advertising campaign?

Back in 1999 when a Screen Actors Guild strike was in place, the Martin Agency created the original Gecko as part of an advertising campaign commissioned by Geico.

The terms of the Screen Actors Guild strike prevented any “human actors” from working in commercials so with an advertising budget to blow, and a brand to build, the Martin agency decided to use animation and create a cute little green character as the Geico spokesperson.

The Gecko campaign was initially launched using a specific Cockney English accent for the character pleading with viewers to stop calling him Geico as he was a gecko.

Between the loveable creature created, the funny British accent, and an entirely new approach to sell car insurance, the Gecko campaign was a smash hit landing a place in the history books of advertising campaigns.

Who does the voice of the Geico Gecko in Geico car insurance commercials?

Over the years the Gecko voice has been played by a handful of actors including Kelsey Grammer, Dave Kelly, and Richard Steven Horvitz. Although there is conflicting information online on who is the voice of the Geico lizard, it appears that right now he is being voiced by British actor Jake Wood.

The famous lizard may have had many different people lending him their voice, but as the Gecko, he has stayed true to Geico offering affordable savings and remained consistently the same through many of their commercials and advertisements. He’s often depicted as helpful and adorable.
