Acura TL: Success from Japan’s Luxury Pioneer

It’s not hard to find drivers who agree the Japanese auto industry can deliver luxury performance vehicles comparable to those of the German makers Mercedes, Audi and BMW.

When Honda’s Acura line debuted in 1986 as the first Japanese luxury car brand, it became so successful that its sales soon exceeded Mercedes and BMW figures, even before the earliest versions of Acura’s signature VTEC engine became available in 1991.

When the first TL arrived in 1995, it was already riding a wave of Acura popularity; within the next decade, it competed with the likes of Audi, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes and Infiniti to become a major midsize luxury sport sedan and a bestseller for Acura.

Acura TL models are known for their reliability and residual value, so rest assured you’ll find solid used TLs for sale if you’re looking for a used model. Reviewers especially like the styling and features beginning with the third generation in 2004.

Features and Specs

If you plan to own and insure a new 2011 or 2012 Acura TL, get to know its signature performance features such as the VTEC six-cylinder engine and optional Super Handling All-Wheel Drive.

VTEC is shorthand for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control, the first valvetrain system of its kind to optimize engine efficiency in both low- and high-range rpms resulting in greater fuel efficiency, performance and engine life.

Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) is an advanced full-time all-wheel drive system highly integrated with handling and braking systems so that it not only “helps out” in snow and wet weather, but optimizes handling under all conditions by delivering torque as needed to front wheels and either or both rear wheels up to specified percentages of maximum available power.

Both VTEC and SH-AWD are pioneering technologies that prompted other luxury makers to follow suit.

The TL is available as a luxurious front-wheel drive cruiser with a 3.5-liter, 280-horsepower VTEC V6 engine and a five-speed automatic with paddle shifters for 2011, upgraded to a more fuel-efficient six-speed version for 2012. For sportier drivers, both 2011 and 2012 all-wheel drive TLs have a 3.7-liter 305-horsepower VTEC V6 engine with a comparable increase from a five- to six-speed automatic transmission between 2011 and 2012.

The SH-AWD trim is also available in both years with an optional six-speed manual transmission for optimized sport driving. The Acura TL has always been a technology trend-setter, and reviewers continue to praise its extensive list of standard features and options.

For 2012, this includes a larger 60GB hard disc drive and a new voice command for music choices in addition to Acura’s highly-praised sound system, navigation and cabin controls. Prices for both years start below $36,000.

Safety Features and Crash Ratings

The Acura TL is well-equipped for safety with anti-lock brakes, Electronic Brake Distribution, Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Assist and tire pressure monitoring. In addition, Acura’s crash-protective structural design known as Advanced Compatibility Engineering lessens the force of impact in front crashes.

Inside the passenger compartment, the TL’s sophisticated system of four air bags and sensors for front passengers optimizes air bag deployment timing and force, and front and back side curtain air bags deploy from above the doorframes as needed.

Front seats have seat belts with load-limiting pretensioners, and all seats have three-point belts and active head restraints. Child safety is addressed with LATCH child safety seat tethers, a sensor to prevent front passenger air bag deployment if a small occupant is detected in its path and auto-reverse on windows and moonroof.

An optional rearview camera and, for 2012, blind spot information system are available.

The federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the most recent generation of Acura TL cars its top rating of five stars in all categories for 2009 and 2010.

The NHTSA has a more stringent rating system as of 2011; thus far, the 2011 TL has received five stars for rollover. Crash testing results are posted on the NHTSA’s website as they become available, so you may want to check back later in the year for further 2011 and 2012 TL crash test results.

The 2011 Acura TL excelled in insurance industry testing performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, earning a top score for front and side impact crashes.

How much is car insurance for an Acura TL?

For a typical driver, the national average price to insure an Acura TL is about $1,500 to $1,650 per year. Where you live can have a substantial effect on this average, however, with some states as low as $1,000 and others above $2,300 for the same coverage.

Your driving record, credit history, annual mileage, age, gender and other factors also have a substantial effect on how much you are charged to insure a TL or any other vehicle. One factor in your favor is a climate of heavy competition in the car insurance industry, so it’s a good idea to be proactive and shop for the best rate you can.
