How much is car insurance for a Ford Expedition?
What can you expect to pay to insure a Ford Expedition? As a first step, understand that the national average for various trim levels ranges between $1300 for lower trims to just over $1500 annually ($108 to $125/month) for several EL trims. You’ll be pleased to know that these averages are competitive with the cost to insure many crossover SUVs, trucks, and sedans!
To determine your actual cost for insuring an Expedition, car insurance companies will take into account factors such as your location, annual mileage, age, gender, driving record and credit score. Therefore, your quotes may be higher or lower than the national average. For example, some of the least expensive states in which to insure a Ford expedition are Vermont and Maine, where state averages are less than $900 annually; expensive states such as Michigan or Louisiana can average $2000 per year or more for the same coverage.
An at-fault accident on your driving record, or even a speeding ticket, can add hundreds of dollars a year to your policy. On the other hand, maintaining a clean driving record for multiple years, or buying all car, home and liability policies from one insurer, may result in substantial discounts. As you can see, a lot of variables affect your cost to insure a Ford Expedition. Be sure to note all available discounts when comparing car insurance quotes, and do your best to maintain a clean driving record and good credit score.
The car insurance industry is highly competitive, so take the time to compare quotes from different insurance companies. To begin shopping for car insurance for a Ford Expedition, enter your zip code now.

The Ford Expedition: Classic Full-Size Transportation
The Ford Expedition has been in production since 1997 and is currently in its third generation, introduced in 2007. Many older Expeditions are still on the road, and resale values are generally strong. How much is a Ford Expedition? For the 2011 model year, the Expedition comes in four regular-length models and an extended-length version of each, for a total of eight models. The extended versions, labelled EL, feature an extra 12 inches in wheelbase length and total extra length of about 15 inches, creating an impressive 42.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the third-row seats.
Starting prices range from $37,070 for the base XL to $49,200 for the top-of-the-line King Ranch EL. Although you can find prior-year models with seating for nine, the current Expedition has bucket seats in front for a total capacity of eight passengers. A nice feature among the Ford Expedition configurations is the ability to fold third-row seats flat to the floor, with a power version on higher trims. The Ford Expedition 2020 price is higher than the 2019 Ford Expedition Platinum Max.
All Expedition models feature a big 5.4-liter V8 engine with six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, all with the choice of rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. A standard towing capacity of 6000 pounds can be upgraded to between 8700 and 9200 pounds depending on vehicle specs. The Ford Expedition’s seating, cargo and towing capacities combine with off-road capabilities to make this a classic large family hauler ready to take you where you want to go. U.S. News & World Report agrees, citing “a roomy and comfortable interior, brawny performance capabilities” and “an affordable entry price” as reasons for ranking it in the top tier of its Affordable Large SUVs category, just behind the Chevrolet Suburban and The Chevrolet Tahoe. Edmunds.com calls it “a fine choice” that “rides and handles better than you’d expect.”
The Ford Expedition’s Safety Features and Crash Evaluations
A significant concern with full-size SUVs is the potential for rollover when the necessity to corner quickly or to swerve away from an object arises. The Expedition is equipped with Ford’s Advance Trac with Roll Stability Control, a system that uses sensors to detect and respond to conditions where the vehicle is at risk of rollover. It does this by reducing power to the engine and engaging selective braking to the wheels. The Expedition also comes with front-seat air bags, side-impact air bags and its Safety Canopy system consisting of side curtain air bags for all three rows.
Standard Traction Control, a crash alert system, and a keyless entry system with keypad and security code are other standard safety features. The Ford Expedition also has power 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist and Electronic Brake Force Distribution to help with handling and control in vulnerable situations.
Federal government crash evaluations for the Ford Expedition performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have been good for recent model years. In 2020, the Expedition received the highest rating of five stars for front- and side-impact testing. The two-wheel drive model received three stars for rollover, while the four-wheel drive version fared a little better at four stars.
The Expedition has been evaluated for rollover, and has maintained these scores. If you’re looking to insure an earlier model year, 2003 through 2007 Expeditions were evaluated for front-impact crashes and received consistent five-star ratings. For 2006 and 2007, the NHTSA also evaluated rollover and gave the same ratings as for later years — three stars for the two-wheel drive and four stars for the four-wheel drive versions.
How does the Ford Expedition compare to other Ford models?
The Expedition is a large, expensive SUV, but insurance rates bay still be lower than Mustang insurance rates since the Mustang is a sports car. The Ford F-150 insurance cost may be lower or higher depending on the model.
