Edmunds provides rate estimates for popular new vehicles, and according to its data, the average 2011 Chevrolet Equinox owner can expect to pay about $1,360 a year for car insurance, or around $113 each month.

Although it’s not as affordable as insuring the Honda CR-V, which costs about $105 annually according to Edmunds’ estimates, insuring the Equinox may be cheaper than insuring other compact SUVs like the Tucson or the RAV4. Edmunds estimates that you’ll pay about $121 per month to insure the Toyota RAV4 and $117 per month to insure a Hyundai Tucson. These rates only represent averages, though. Repair and Maintenance Costs for the Equinox

Edmunds estimates that car insurance rates for the Chevy Equinox are less than those for some other compact SUVs, but repair costs for the Equinox are expected to be on the high side. While Edmunds’ data suggests that RAV4, Tucson, and CR-V owners will pay around $732 for repairs during the first five years they drive their vehicles, estimated repair costs for the Equinox are $848.

These higher repair costs are consistent with reliability scores provided by J.D. Power and Associates. The organization gave the Equinox a Predicted Reliability score of 6.0, which is average for a compact SUV. The Honda CR-V and the Honda Element both received scores of 9.0 out of 10, and the RAV4 scored an 8.0 out of 10. At the low end, the Suzuki Grand Vitara only scored a 4.0 out of 10.

Scheduled maintenance for the Chevrolet Equinox is also on the expensive side, costing nearly $4,000 over five years. No repairs are expected until the third year the vehicle is on the road, though. You’ll save several hundred dollars on maintenance if you go with the RAV4, the Tucson, or the CR-V.

Chevy Equinox Fuel Costs

When it comes to highway fuel economy, the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox can’t be beat. It offers a best-in-class 32 highway mpg, tying for first place among compact SUVs with the GMC Terrain. The Hyundai Tucson comes close with 30 highway mpg, and the Kia Sportage is the runner-up with a 29 mpg rating in highway driving.

Why are some car insurance quotes cheaper than others?

If you plan to do mainly city driving, though, there may be better options available. The Chevrolet Equinox gets a respectable 22 city mpg, but the Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Ford Escape all have EPA ratings of 23 mpg in city driving. This difference may seem insignificant, but over time it can add up to quite a bit, especially if gas prices continue to rise.

Chevrolet Equinox Safety Ratings and Features

The Chevrolet Equinox doesn’t just excel when it comes to fuel economy. It also has some of the strongest safety ratings in its class, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) designated it a “Top Safety Pick” for 2011. It earned the highest rating of “Good” in all four IIHS tests, including rear, side, and front impacts, and roof strength testing.

The federal government’s test results for the 2011 Equinox have not been released yet, but the 2010 model performed well. It received the full five stars for its protection of both drivers and passengers in frontal, rear, and side-impact collisions, and it earned four stars for its performance in rollover tests.

Standard safety features include emergency brake assist, anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. All Chevy Equinox models are also equipped with electronic brake force distribution systems, which work with the anti-lock brakes to vary the amount of brake pressure that is applied to individual wheels. This helps drivers avoid skids and maintain control under adverse conditions.

The Equinox also comes standard with GM’s OnStar safety system, which alerts emergency response teams if you’re involved in an accident. For even more security, you can opt for a backup camera and rear parking assist on the higher-end Equinox trims.

Rankings and Reviews for the 2011 Equinox

The Chevrolet Equinox earned the #2 spot on U.S. News and World Report’s listing of 23 compact SUVs. It came in 2nd after the Toyota RAV4, and it tied with the Honda CR-V. The GMC Terrain and the Volkswagen Tiguan ranked 4th and 5th place, respectively. For a compact SUV, the Equinox is on the larger side, and reviewers like the Detroit News say that it is a good value for its starting price of $22,995. It is more expensive than competitors like the Ford Escape, Honda Element, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tucson, but it offers better fuel economy and a more luxurious interior than these other compact SUVs.

Reviewers also like the Equinox’s versatility. Buyers can upgrade it with all-wheel drive and a V6 engine, which is unusual for a compact SUV. However, it does not offer third-row seating, which could be an obstacle for large families. The Equinox’s standard engine is a 2.4 liter, 4-cylinder that generates 182 horsepower. Although this does not make the Chevy Equinox the fastest compact SUV on the road, it contributes to the vehicle’s excellent fuel economy. In defense of the Equinox, Businessweek says that the 4-cylinder engine’s power should be “adequate” for daily commuters, and the Detroit News reminds consumers that the vehicle can travel up to 600 miles before it needs more fuel.
