Chevrolet Tahoe Insurance Rates by Model Year
Another factor that will impact your car insurance rates is the model year of your Chevrolet Tahoe. Older car models tend to receive lower insurance rates because they are cheaper to fix.
The model year you purchase will also impact your Tahoe’s estimated cost of ownership. Vehicles that are notoriously expensive to replace or maintain over five years are often considered to be high risk to insurance companies. Therefore, those cars usually receive higher insurance quotes.
Fortunately, the Chevrolet Tahoe stacks up well against the competition in the SUV category. According to Kelley Blue Book, the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe has the lowest predicted five-year ownership cost of any full-size SUV.
Historically, all Tahoe models have lower than average long-term ownership costs.

Do the Chevrolet Tahoe safety ratings impact car insurance?
We’ve talked about the rates for car insurance by state, but did you know vehicle safety ratings can also cause your premiums to increase or decrease?
A vehicle’s safety ratings can have a huge impact on your car insurance quotes.
Let’s explore the Chevrolet Tahoe safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Both the four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe models received four out of five stars for their safety ratings. Overall, these results are promising and will have a positive impact on your insurance rates.
The 2010 model received a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Administration. It received three out of five possible stars in rollover crash tests, which is comparable to the performance of the competing Ford Expedition two-wheel-drive model.
Unfortunately for those hoping for a 2002 Chevy Tahoe crash test or 2010 Chevy Tahoe crash test, none have been performed for these models.
However, the Chevrolet Tahoe comes equipped with reassuring standard safety features like 4-wheel antilock brakes, roll mitigation, traction control, electronic stability control, and side curtain air bags to protect passengers in all three rows.
Depending on what safety features you’ve included in your model, your Chevy Tahoe may qualify for discounts that will help lower your rates.
History of the Chevrolet Tahoe
Chevrolet is a part of the General Motors family. General Motors also owns GMC, Buick, and Cadillac. The Chevrolet Tahoe is one of General Motors’ most popular full-size SUVs. (For more information, read our “Cheap Buick Car Insurance“).
Originally, the Chevy Tahoe was known as the Blazer SUV. In 1994, it was renamed the Tahoe and upgraded to a four-door model. Because GMC rebranded a similar SUV in 1992, now popularly known as the GMC Yukon, Chevrolet had to rebrand the Blazer in order to remain relevant.
Today, the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are General Motors’ base model SUVs, and each is available with an extended wheelbase in the form of the Suburban and Yukon XL, respectively.
General Motors’ flagship luxury SUV is an upgraded version of the Yukon XL, called the Denali. The Tahoe and the Yukon are mechanically very similar, but reviewers say the Chevrolet Tahoe has received some exterior styling updates that leave the Yukon looking a bit plain.
Sales of the Chevrolet Tahoe peaked in 2002 at 209,767, compared to a peak of just 86,571 for the GMC Yukon in 2004. Sales of both the Chevrolet Tahoe and the GMC Yukon have declined steadily since the mid-2000s, although the Chevrolet Tahoe did see a small spike in sales in 2010.
Fortunately, General Motors car insurance rates are not more expensive than other car brands. While General Motors’ sports cars and luxury vehicles will receive higher than average car insurance rates, the Chevrolet Tahoe is affordable to insure.

Chevrolet Tahoe Performance
When choosing what vehicle is right for you, you have to look beyond car insurance rates. Let’s discuss the Tahoe’s performance details to see if this popular SUV can accommodate all of your driving needs.
The Chevrolet Tahoe gets 15 miles per gallon in the city and 21 miles per gallon on the highway. While this is not an impressive fuel economy by any stretch of the imagination, it is better than other full-size SUVs like the Ford Expedition, the Toyota Sequoia, and the Nissan Armada.
The Suburban and the Yukon offer identical fuel economy ratings to the Chevrolet Tahoe.
The Chevrolet Tahoe’s 5.3-liter V8 engine delivers 320 horsepower and up to 8,500 pounds of towing capacity for the two-wheel-drive version. The four-wheel-drive model can tow up to 8,200 pounds.
When it comes to acceleration and handling, reviewers like Edmunds, Motor Week, and Consumer Guide say that the Chevrolet Tahoe performs exceptionally well for a vehicle of its size.
MotorWeek calls the Tahoe’s maneuverability amazing, and Consumer Guide says the acceleration is fine at all speeds. Ultimately, if you’re looking for a reliable SUV that will not cost an arm and a leg to insure, the Tahoe is perfect for you.
Awards and Honors for the Chevrolet Tahoe
Researching vehicle awards and honors might not directly lead to lower insurance rates; however, it can help you determine driver satisfaction before choosing to buy. There are many awards that owners of the Chevy Tahoe can brag about.
In U.S. News and World Report’s 2011 ranking of affordable full-size SUVs, the Chevrolet Tahoe tied with the Chevrolet Suburban for first place, and also took the prize for Best Full-Size SUV for the Money.
With a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $37,570, the base model Chevrolet Tahoe is about $1,000 less than the base model GMC Yukon.
The 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe also garnered an Editor’s Choice Award from Car and Driver, as well as a Best Bet designation by The Car Book. The Tahoe was also given a Car of the Year award from Truecar.
In contrast, the more expensive and less stylish Yukon ranked fifth out of eight full-size SUVs on U.S. News and World Report’s list. The vehicles that ranked below the Yukon were the Yukon Hybrid, the Tahoe Hybrid, and the Nissan Armada.
While these awards may not directly lead to lower car insurance rates, the accolades do prove that the Tahoe is a sturdy, trustworthy SUV.
Chevrolet Tahoe Special Service Vehicle
One unique feature of the Chevrolet Tahoe is its available Special Service Vehicle, or SSV, package. The SSV package equips the Tahoe for use as a police vehicle.
Knowing that police officers trust the Tahoe means this SUV will also be safe and reliable for you and your family.
The two-wheel-drive Chevrolet Tahoe SSV is approved for high-speed chases and is the only special service SUV to have this distinction. The four-wheel-drive Chevrolet Tahoe SSV is not approved for use in high-speed pursuits because its high center of gravity increases the likelihood of rollovers.
However, the four-wheel-drive Chevy Tahoe is preferred by police forces that frequently operate in adverse weather conditions or off-road. If you live in a region with ample snow or rainfall, consider the four-door model.
